Willem de Looper was an abstract painter and former chief curator of the Phillips Collection in Washington. De Looper began working in 1959 as a security guard for what was then known as the Phillips Gallery; he became assistant curator in '72 and in '82 was named curator. In 1987, he retired to paint full-time.
